Frequently Asked Questions

Have any questions about working at Blum Shapiro? We'd be more than happy to answer them - but take a look first at some of the questions we're most often asked.

What's your policy on the 5th year?
You are required to complete 150 hours of coursework in order to obtain your Connecticut CPA license. Our firm, recognizing the additional expense and time that has to be put into becoming a CPA, offers a loan to pay for classes. The loan is forgivable after you have completed three years of employment with the firm. We also offer a full time employment schedule with summers off without pay or we can prorate your pay over the entire year so you have a steady income through the summer.

When do you make your hiring decisions?
Our peak hiring time is in October and November.

What types of internships do you offer?
Internships give students the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and become immersed in the real world of accounting beyond the classroom. Your experience at Blum Shapiro will be well rounded – you'll be sent out on client engagements to get field experience with tax, accounting and audit services as well as getting exposure to a range of industries. Your internship will give you the opportunity to learn about our firm and public accounting through interaction with everyone from new staff to our most senior partners, client experience and social events.
We offer paid internships for both Winter (January-April) and Summer (June-August).

What is busy season like?
Each staff level has a chargeable hour goal for the year. During busy season, your chargeable hour goal increases and you will typically work most Saturdays from January 15 – April 15. While it's a hectic time, we try to make busy season as fun and stress-less as possible - bagels, donuts and coffee on Saturdays, dinner deliveries during the week, and a Spirit Committee dedicated to keeping a smile on everyone's face.

What's my growth potential at Blum Shapiro and how does the firm help me meet that potential?
We regularly promote our staff through an evaluation process which includes evaluations for each engagement over 30 hours and bi-annual reviews. Blum Shapiro also has a mentoring program that matches each staff and senior person with a manager or supervisor. And for new staff, we have a buddy program pairing recent college graduates with someone close to your level who has already learned about our firm and public accounting. Your buddy will help you as you adjust to your new work environment and offer guidance as needed.
